Working Memory and Aphasia
نویسنده
چکیده
Aphasia is traditionally considered to be an acquired language impairment, due to a focal (usually left-lateralized) brain lesion. However, during the last decades, there has been mounting evidence that aphasic patients also demonstrate non-linguistic processing deficits. This paper is focused on the relationship between language and memory deficits. Throughout the history of aphasiology, many scholars have corroborated the idea that there is a strong link between these two fundamental aspects of cognition. Contemporary research further supports this notion, by presenting evidence derived from lesion studies and brain imaging in healthy participants as well. In this context, aphasia is defined as a cognitive disorder with prominent linguistic deficits, rather than a specific language disturbance. © 2015 ACT. All rights reserved.

The paced auditory serial addition test for working memory assessment: Psychometric properties
Background: The paced auditory serial addition test (PASAT) was primarily developed to assess the effects of traumatic brain injury on cognitive functioning. Working memory (WM) is one of the most important aspects of cognitive function, and WM impairment is one of the clinically remarkable signs of aphasia. To develop the Persian version of PASAT, an initial version was used in individuals wit...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between Memory, Type, and Severity of Aphasia With Confrontation Naming in Post-Stroke Patients With Chronic Aphasia
Objectives: The brain’s widespread neural functions lead to aphasia in which the patients experience difficulties in cognitive and language functions. Memory, type, and severity of aphasia are associated with language and the naming process. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between memory, type, and severity of aphasia using the confrontation naming test in post-stroke pat...
متن کاملAs far as individuals with conduction aphasia understood these sentences were ungrammatical : Garden path in
Background: Recent studies have indicated that working memory is not a unitary resource and that different types of working memory are used for different types of linguistic processing: syntactic, semantic, and phonological. Phonological working memory was found to support the comprehension of sentences that require re-access to the word-form of a word that appeared earlier in the sentence. Aim...
متن کاملShort-term and working memory impairments in aphasia.
The aim of the present study is to investigate short-term memory and working memory deficits in aphasics in relation to the severity of their language impairment. Fifty-eight aphasic patients participated in this study. Based on language assessment, an aphasia score was calculated for each patient. Memory was assessed in two modalities, verbal and spatial. Mean scores for all memory tasks were ...
متن کاملWorking memory in aphasia: theory, measures, and clinical implications.
Recently, researchers have suggested that deficits in working memory capacity contribute to language-processing difficulties observed in individuals with aphasia (e.g., I. Caspari, S. Parkinson, L. A theoretical framework of working memory can aid in ...
متن کاملProcessing distinct linguistic information types in working memory in aphasia.
BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have suggested that adults with aphasia present with a working memory deficit that may contribute to their language-processing difficulties. Working memory capacity has been conceptualised as a single "resource" pool for attentional, linguistic, and other executive processing-alternatively, it has been suggested that there may be separate working memory abiliti...
